Employment Background Checks – Hiring Employees

 

Do you get involved with hiring employees? Over 90% of Employers perform a background check when hiring new employees. If you are one of these you may not be performing a full background screening.

It is prudent to check all areas of an applicant’s background prior to making a hiring decision. It would not be wise to just perform one search such as the ‘Criminal Background Check’. Although this is one of the important searches that should always be done, you will want to check other records too. This way you learn of any potential causes for concern before investing time and resources in the hiring and training process. Our most judicious clients take this very seriously.

As such, we are pleased to introduce our newest Employment Background Verification Package which includes a full suite of all 6 items listed below.

1.  Bankruptcies, Judgments and Liens

You will want to know about bankruptcies, judgments and liens. This search provides nationwide coverage on all court actions. The Bankruptcies include chapter 7, 9, 11, 13 Schedule 34\Trustee ship in all 50 states, the District of Columbia and Puerto Rico.

The Judgments and Tax Liens are available for all states except Montana and the District of Columbia. However there may be a few regions that may not be available due to lack of computerization in those courthouses.

The Liens range from Federal, State and County Tax liens and State Tax warrants. The judgment cases include Small Claims Judgment, Civil Special Judgment, Deficiency Judgments, Foreclosures, Forcible Entry\Detainer, Civil new filings, Civil dismissal, Vacated\Appealed Judgment and Abstract of Judgment.

The Bankruptcy records are updated on a weekly basis. The Judgments and Tax Liens are updated on a daily basis.

The Bankruptcy, Judgment and Liens are available for all 50 states in the US.

2.  Drivers Record Search

You should perform a Drivers Record search for all applicants whether you plan to have them drive while employed or not.

A Drivers Record Check can inform you of a license that is not clear. You will definitely want to perform this search if your employee will drive on the job often or possibly only on occasion. It would be prudent to check the driving records even when you do not plan to have the employee drive while employed. It may disclose crimes such as drunken-driving, drug use, or driving while under the influence. You need to find out about crimes such as these during your screening process. This knowledge will help to avoid potential problems down the road. These problems could influence a person’s trustworthiness, ability to perform their job, and attendance at work especially if their license is not clear to drive.

3.  Education Verification

It is important to perform an Education Verification to confirm the resume and application submitted. Often times, the education information on an application is not true in its entirety. By verifying the accuracy of this information provided, you are also verifying trustworthiness and honesty of the applicant. If the information is verified, it can give you more confidence in the ability of your applicant. It has been found that some applicants may tell you that they have a degree when in fact they have not finished their education and actually received the degree.

4.  Employment Verification

It is a wise decision to check the employment records listed on an application.

At times you could find the dates of employment, position, or wages may be falsified or changed. Sometimes this is done to cover unexplained non-working periods that someone may not want to disclose to you. The reason behind these unexplained working periods is something you will want to uncover as well. Also the reason that they left their employment may be misreported on their application so be sure to have this verified prior to hiring.

This search can help you in determining if your applicant is a person you can feel comfortable to place in a position of trust in your business with honesty and good integrity.

5.  National Criminal Background Check

Criminal Background Reports are the backbone for performing pre-employment screening. However, you should not rely on this search alone. We offer an exclusive product which provides access to criminal data from 42 states where more than 75 percent of the nation’s population lives (currently over 78 million offense records from over 55 million offenders.) These comprehensive searches are only one-price-for-all-states. Checking your applicant’s criminal background in the current state only is not enough. Your applicant could have convictions in other states that go undisclosed. This is why a search of this scope is your best defense. Be sure to include this search in your full Employment Verification Screening process.

For the following 5 states, (AL, CA, NM, ND, SD) you will need to order a Statewide Criminal Background Check. We recommend that you also run a National Criminal Background Check because many people are transient and may have criminal records in other states. Often applicants conveniently forget to tell you about other states they have resided in.

The following 8 states DO NOT report their criminal records nationally or by state.

For these states we recommend that you do a ‘National Criminal Background Check’ for records in other states that are reported and in the county(s) where they do\have resided in any of the states on the list below. You will also want to perform a ‘County Criminal Background Check’ for applicants in these states.

National Criminal Background Check: To check for criminal records for 42 states all in one report.

Statewide Criminal Background Check: To check for criminal records with details which are only available in the Statewide Criminal Background Check.

County Criminal Background Check: To check for criminal records that are not included in the National Criminal Background Check or Statewide Criminal Background Check and are only available by ‘Specific County’. We recommend that you do a County Criminal Search for the county where they currently reside.

The Nationwide Criminal Background Check includes Sex and Violent Offenders for all 50 states and the criminal records for 42 states in the US.

6.  Personal Reference Check

The Personal Reference Check can help you to determine if your applicant has traits that are reliable, dependable and a person that you would place in a position of trust. You can’t learn this from searching a database. This is done via a phone call with the same questions asked for all applicants.

We ask how long they have known the applicant, their association, and if they are related. We ask about their recommendations for hire and their trustworthiness. We ask about their strong points and least favorable attributes. We also add any additional information that might be important to the hiring of the applicant learned from the interview process.

Often times, a personal call of this nature can provide you additional information about a person’s habits, behavior, or problems that they wouldn’t tell you during the interview process. On the other hand, the results of this reference check can put you at ease and give you the confidence that you are making the right decision about your applicant.

Deceased Property Owners

Deceased Property Owner?
Have you found the right property to buy and you’re ready to make an offer and then discover that the owner is deceased? You are not at a dead end in this situation. We are here to help! There is a good possibility that we can provide valuable resources that will assist you on this property.

Here’s what we will do for you. We will start by searching on the person you are looking for and find the date of death. Next we will do our best to search for a living relative as we understand that you will need to locate someone who is in charge of the estate or property and who may have authority to sell the property.

When we find a living relative we will provide this Skip Trace Report for you. If there are multiple likely relatives we will try to select someone mid age who is not too young to understand how to help, and not too old and possibly not able to make such decisions any more.

We don’t always find a living relative, however we continue to search. When we cannot provide find a Skip Trace Report for a living relative associated with the address provided, we will next look for an obituary record. The obituary records are normally available for us to search online from 2000 and forward. Older records may need to be attained by you from a local library via microfiche. If we are able to find an obituary record we will do a couple of different things depending upon the results we find.

First, we will see if there is likely living relative listed on the obituary record that we can search on. We will then provide the Skip Trace Report for a living relative when we find one listed here. We don’t give up and we do our best to exhaust all avenues to help you so you can do that deal.

Last, we will provide a Skip Trace Report for the deceased subject. You may find that other companies may only provide information about the deceased person possibly with the date of death, and nothing else that would be of help for you in these cases. Not us, we perform several searches using different databases to find information about a living relative to help you. We care about helping you and put forth extra effort to make this happen whenever possible.

If the obituary record is too general or short and we cannot find a living relative we will then provide the obituary record along with the Skip Trace Report for the deceased subject. Also, when we cannot find an obituary record or record of a living relative at the subject’s address we will provide the deceased person’s Skip Trace Report. There is likely to be some information in this report that may help you locate someone who can assist you with this property that you are interested in. This may take some extra time for you to use these valuable resources on the Skip Trace Report, but when you find what you need you will know it was well worth your time. 

In the event that we cannot generate a Skip Trace Report for any of the options above, we will credit your FindTheSeller.com account with a search that you can use sometime in the future. This credit has no expiration. And there is no charge for this search. This is unlikely to happen as we do find reports over 95% of the time on an ongoing basis. This is unheard of in the industry.

Verification Background Checks

I would like to address the importance of Employment and Tenant Screening Verification Checks. If you are Landlord or Property Owner and considering renting or leasing to a prospective tenant you should include all Verification Background Checks prior to your selection. By conducting verification background checks that include an actual phone call to confirm the information provided you are you are going the extra step to ensure you have been provided with accurate information on the application. It is important to consider that information may be misreported, falsified, or erroneous in regards to employment or character references. You cannot always find out the facts by just searching in a database. When an actual phone call is made you are able to confirm the facts and other valuable information about a person’s character traits, trustworthiness, honesty, etc.

Employment Verification

The Employment Verification is a live call made to the Employer to verify dates of employment, wages when provided, position, and duties.

The applicant can potentially falsify their employment information and may have recently lost the job, wages may be less than reported on the application, or the position may be temporary rather than permanent. Any of these or similar circumstances could lead you to filling a tenant vacancy with a person who may not be able to pay the rent or less in the near future.

It is also possible that an applicant could misreport the dates of employment in order to cover up unexplained non working periods that someone may not wish to disclose to you.

The current employment verification is one of the most important screenings you should perform. You need to be assured that your rent or lease can be paid before you turn over your keys and property.

Personal Reference Check

Tenant Reference Check

The Tenant Reference Check is a live call to a previous Landlord and similar to a Character Reference Check. This verification includes the following 6 questions.

  1. The dates rented or leased are verified.
  2. Have there been any late payments, and if so how many?
  3. Has there been any property damage caused by this tenant?
  4. Did this tenant keep the property clean?
  5. Did the tenant provide routine upkeep on the property?
  6. Would you rent to this individual in the future?

As this is first hand information from a prior Landlord and not something you will find in a database, it may uncover valuable information regarding the prospective tenant. You should consider including this search with all your tenant screening background checks.  

Please keep in mind that this ‘reference check’ is different from our other product ‘tenant screening’ which is a national database search from Landlords for negative information, court actions, prior Landlord inquiries, and information such as bad checks, evictions etc.
